Wuhan University is located in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, which enjoys the reputation of “the highway of nine provinces” due to its convenient transportation. The university is surrounded by scenic nature, with the picturesque Luojia Hill in the centre and the beautiful East Lake on the shore. Its 346-hectare campus is covered with forest and greenery, and fragrant flowers grow everywhere throughout the year. The magnificent and palatial buildings have been designed in unique architectural styles, and the university is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful in China.

Wuhan University traces its roots back to Ziqiang Institute, which was founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan provinces during the late Qing Dynasty. Its name was later changed several times before it was named National Wuhan University in July 1928. With the approval of the State Council of China, the new Wuhan University was founded on August 2, 2000, as a result of the merger of four first-class universities – the original Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electrical Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Geodesy and Cartography, and Hubei Medical University. Wuhan University has become an institution of higher learning with a wide range of disciplines, a strong faculty, an excellent environment for people’s learning and wide influence at home and abroad.
